K-Beauty Retail Margins: How to Price Your Shelf
How retail margins work for spas, salons and clinics, with room for promotions, and why professional channels do not need to match the lowest online price.
What keystone pricing means
Keystone pricing is the retail rule of thumb that you sell at double your wholesale cost, which leaves a 50% gross margin to cover rent, staff time, card fees and the occasional discount. Many beauty businesses price a little under keystone on products that are also sold online, and still keep 45% or more.
A simple way to check your margin
Margin is the shelf price minus your cost, divided by the shelf price. Selling at twice your cost gives you 50%. Selling at 1.8 times your cost gives you about 44%. Run the same sum on every product before you set shelf prices.
Where promotions fit
A promotion comes straight out of your margin, so start from a margin that can afford it. A 15% seasonal offer on a product that starts at a 46% margin still leaves you roughly 37%.
Why professional retail can price near online
Clients are paying for a recommendation from someone they trust, a tested routine and the convenience of buying on the spot. That is why professional channels commonly price at or near online retail, rather than racing to match the lowest listing.
